Creating “Golden Proportions”
by Debra Rasberry
In ancient Greece, Helen of Troy, considered the instigator of the Trojan War, was upheld as the paragon of beauty. She was celebrated not for her kindness or intellect but for her physical perfection. It boils down to her symmetry, her “golden proportions.” The width of the face would be two thirds its length, while the nose would be no longer than the distance between the eyes.
With today’s aesthetic technology, creating symmetry with cosmetic surgery or permanent micropigmentation (permanent cosmetics) is easily done in a single afternoon. Permanent cosmetics artistry has evolved, allowing typical flaws to be corrected or camouflaged. These seemingly vain procedures, often viewed with a jaundice perception by many, can be tremendously change a persons self-image and self-esteem for the better.
The question is: How much does being more attractive mean to you and how far should you go to attain perfection?Scientists say that the preference for symmetry is a highly evolved trait seen in many different animals. Babies spend more time staring at pictures of symmetric individuals than they do at photos of asymmetric ones. The rational behind symmetry preference in both humans and animals is that symmetric individuals have a higher mate-value. Scientists believe that this symmetry is equated with a strong immune system. Thus, beauty signals more robust genes that will produce healthier offspring.
A person’s intellect, demeanor, and personality also influence how others perceive his or her Beauty. This happens only after a first visual impression (which takes approximately one-tenth of a second).
Are you wearing a halo?
If you are deemed attractive by a society, you have the advantage of an angel. Attractive people tend to be more intelligent, diplomatic, and popular. This is called the “halo effect.’ Statistics prove that attractive people are more successful. Being born beautiful is a gift from God, but confidently knowing that you are attractive is pure power.
Harnessing beauty and confidence creates limitless life options. Beauty matters and affects how we choose our mates, thus striving to be more attractive is not such a vain endeavor after all. Should you consider plastic surgery or other aesthetic procedures that are available? You decide.
